A morning summer Sunday drive finds you surrounded by scenic rolling hills abundant with hay bale-dotted fields and a copse of magnificent trees in the background. Another may lead you along rugged coastal roads featuring weathered shores, enticingly blue water forming fiercely crashing waves. Nature at its finest hour. This is precisely the awe-inspiring scene that moves landscape artist, Mikel Wintermantel, C. M., to apply his talented brush to canvas. Working with oil, watercolor, acrylic and alkyd paints, Wintermantel translates idyllic, natural settings onto canvas and panels. He said, “I am always inspired by nature. Luckily where

Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival; A Royal Affair
By Eva Potter excellent skiing, fun music, snow pony races, the dummy downhill, delicious cookouts, crazy contests, mood soothing libations and the Winter Carnival King and Queen “contest.” This year, the Winter Carnival Ski King and Queen will be crowned once again slopeside at Holiday Valley. According to the book, For the Love of Skiing: Our Story of Skiing in Ellicottville, by Edna Northrup and Lillian Congdon, the first woman to be crowned Carnival Queen was Penny Cox of Canada. The regular meeting of the town board, held February 24, covered a variety of topics. Town Supervisor Burrell announced some good news stating that $257,927 dollars in funds from FEMA will be allocated to the town. Dave Golly, Highway Superintendent opened discussion on the issues of fuel pumps for the highway department. Golly has remarked on the important issue of the highway’s fuel pump operating system. Stating that the aged system is stressed and consideration of repair versus replacement needs to be addressed. Accommodation to service vehicles, size of tanks, sophistication of equipment and diesel fuel is all a plan for the fu-
ture and non-waste, according to councilman John Northrup. Dave golly raised a good point by stating, “The tanks are entirely too old to keep up with, and the possibility of salvaging old tanks for future use may help to offset the price of new ones”. Further details on the operating system of the tanks, such as the pump computer, double tanks, accommodation for diesel fuel, leasing or purchasing brand new equipment, as well as the raw fuel costs raised concerned discussion. Further discussion was the maintenance of the highway vehicles and the cost effective strategies and repair bills. Computerized auto systems
