We’ve Come a Long Way!
By Gerlind Dubey, Editor, Owner
Our niche is to concentrate on local, personal and community events. In the process we try help local citizens, weekend residents, and visitors identify what it means to be a member of this SPECIAL community.
It was in 1988 that Hank Dubey, a transplant from Texas started working for “The Tree Town Talk”, a fairly new weekly publication started by Fran Brady. Selling ads and writing humorous articles was Dubey’s job. However, unable to procure a paycheck from Brady, Dubey started The Ellicottville Special- E-Fects. With the help of Carol Fisher his right hand Lois Lane the paper soon became the favorite of tourists and locals alike. Special E fects was dubbed the “Good News Paper” as most articles were of a humorous nature, with updates on events, festivals, skiing and golf.
The signature page was the then unusual ‘collage page’. On any given Friday people waited anxiously to open the paper and scan the faces to see if their photo was among the many pasted together to create the “collage” page.
Dubey’s skill for unbiased, accurate writing soon earned the paper the title of the Official Paper of The Village and Town of Ellicottville.
When Hank Dubey passed away very unexpectedly in 2004, he left me, his widow, to carry on. Knowing little about the newspaper business, I was at quite the loss. However by relying on the expertise of Brenda Perks, advisor, Brian McFadden and with the help of close friends, we were able to continue publishing, this “little paper”.
Over the past four years Special-E-Fects has had a few ups and downs, but we’ve persevered and through trial and error have evolved into a genuine “small town paper.”
Our mission as a small-town newspaper is to make residents as well as visitors aware of their surroundings and the changes that occur. By reporting the daily life events of local people and our local government, Special-E-Fects serves an important function in community life. We reflect, assert, and continue to build a positive community atmosphere.
