In Memory of Eleanor “Jean” Bixby

Long time resident of Ellicottville Eleanor Jean Bixby, 85, passed away Thursday (March 26, 2009) at Olean General Hospital.

Born on September 24, 1923, in Red House NY, she was the daughter of Leland “Gus’ and Marjorie (Kaufman) Remington.

On December 6, 1946 in Little Valley, Eleanor Remington married Howard B. Bixby, who preceded her in death on October 11, 2004. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a grandson Jarod Simcick and two sisters Frances Breton and Pat Milks.

The couple raised 4 daughters on Monroe Street in Ellicottville. Mellissa Thornberg now of Sacramento, California, Pamela (Thomas) Simsick, of Hinsdale, NY, Laurel (Bradley) Steffan of Eden, NY, and Joni Simcick (Robert)Simsick of Little Valley NY. Mrs. Bixby is also survived by three grandchildren Thomas (Becky) Simsick Jr., Jacob Steffan, and Jennifer Thornberg. Also surviving are two sisters Roberta Corbin of Eden New York and Clara Sayers of Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bixby was a Library Aide and Teachers Aide for many years at Ellicottville Central School. She always said “If you listen to children they will tell you everything.” She loved reading to the kids and later in life she cherished reading and doing crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Bixby was a member of The Ellicottville American Legion Auxiliary, the United Church of Ellicottville and the Order of The Eastern Star. Mrs. Bixby will be placed to rest in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
