THE THRILL OF VICTORY
By Gerlind Dubey (02/06/2009)
The mission of the Phoenix Adaptive Snowsports Program is to ensure that mentally and/or physically challenged children and adults have the support needed to meet their personal goals.
With this in mind the programs dedicated Director and staff planned this race to enable students to compete with students from other likeminded adaptive programs in a downhill race atmosphere. Now in its sixth year, the Phoenix Adaptive Center welcomes over 80 adaptive racers and their families to HoliMont and to Ellicottville. Contenders will arrive from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Southern Ontario and Western New York, to participate in the Phoenix Adaptive International Race.
The event is an experience to behold; the race gives physically and mentally challenged participants, teamed up with extraordinary volunteers, the ability to spread their wings. Giving these special needs students the freedom of sliding down a snowy slope to the cheers of family and onlookers truly is the thrill of victory not just to the racers but to all who witness this amazing race.
Director of the Phoenix Adaptive Program Chuck Richardson, the staff of professional adaptive instructors and trained volunteers takes great pride in each and every one of their students. Their goal is providing students with safe and supportive skills, increasing confidence levels to help them attain new heights, not only on the slopes but also in every aspect of their lives. |
