6 Week Basketball Program A Great Success!
By Gerlind Dubey (01/16/2009)
Thanks to sponsorship by the Town of Great Valley the youngsters of the Ellicottville Central School District participated in the first of a series of extra curricular activities geared towards recreational fun for children. More than 90 1st- 6th grade girls and boys signed up for the program which encouraged kids to have fun while being introduced to basketball skills, all the while learning good sportsmanship, and improving their coordination.
“Not all kids ski, the program was reinstated so kids could interact and mostly have fun” stated ECS teacher and program volunteer, Bill Delity. Teachers, parents and other volunteers including Bill Delity, Matt Finn, Tim Grinols, Rob Logel, Roger Spell, Andy Moore and Todd Palmetier volunteered their time, and by splitting up in grade groups they effectively coached all levels.
This past Saturday held the conclusion of the six week program. Parents, Grandparents and other onlookers watched the youngsters strut their stuff by performing basketball drills and showing off their new found skills, with a celebratory pizza party as the grand finale.
The skills learned during the six week Recreational Youth Program will be performed by the youngsters during half-time sessions of ECS Varsity and Junior Varsity games.
Carl Schwartz, ECS teacher and advocate of the program stated that, this first of a series of programs utilizing the school and the gymnasium is a prelude for more ongoing recreational activities for children. These programs are open to all School Tax payers interested in participating, with the goal of encouraging interaction between the ECS School System and the community.
Soccer sign ups for the same type of experience start next week.
