BALD IS BEAUTIFUL….NOT
By Kaysie Raecher (11/7/2008)
Isn’t bald supposed to be beautiful? Don’t the things that are inside only matter? That’s what I thought until I saw a picture of Hannah Lewis from Kyreen, Kansas. Yeah, maybe she was a nice ten-year-old girl. Maybe she was really smart. Who knows? She could have been a phenomenal soccer player, but cancer took her long, curly locks of brown hair away- the hair that framed her face and brought out the shine in her dark green eyes. They were the curls she had since the day she was born. And now they were gone.
I knew what I had to do. I needed to cut my hair to put a smile on a sick, little girl’s face. But how could I do it? I had long, cascading hair myself. Everyone coveted my locks, saying the color was “one in a million”. But that was inconsequential. Girls like Hannah Lewis and thousands more were bald, and they were at risk of dying. They deserved their last days with beautiful hair on their heads.
So, I spent four months growing my hair an additional five inches so I could donate ten all together. Everyday my love for my hair grew, but my need to give it up enlarged, too. I knew it was the prudent thing to do.
In December of 2005, I got ten inches of my hair cut off, leaving it at my chin.
Tears poured from my eyes when the hairdresser made the first snip. Not only was I upset my locks were gone, but I was also abundant with joy. My hair would grow back, but a girl’s with cancer might not have. I smiled cheek to cheek, but cried harder than ever.
To me, bald may be beautiful, but the gift of hair is even more wonderful.
