NANNEN ARBORETUM UPDATE
By Cornell Co-operative Extension Master Gardener, Patricia Kerl

The Nannen Arboretum Committee has been busy this summer/fall working on projects to make your visits to the arboretum more enjoyable and informative.

A new sign, made and donated by Robert Truckenbrod, was erected at the far end of the arboretum adjacent to the new condos welcoming visitors from that side of town;
A new sign was purchased and placed adjacent to the pond requesting “Catch and Release” fishing only.

Repairs were made to the McCrae Memorial including a new sundial; An ash tree was removed from the Herb Garden area allowing more sunlight into the Herb Garden; Two new ash trees were donated by Frank Hoerner and planted by the arboretum committee in the open area between the two nature halls and Fillmore Street; New tree/shrub specimen signs are being purchased to replace damaged ones and to identify new acquisitions;

Many hours were spent related to the Herb Garden creating a database of the original beds and the current status of herbs, cleaning/repairing signage, weeding of the beds and the paths, and beginning the reconstruction of the beds; additional volunteer hours in this area are gratefully welcomed.
Garden Clubs and other groups are always welcome to request a Master Gardener led tour of the arboretum for $2 per person. The Portville Garden Club and the Brockport Garden Club took advantage of this opportunity this summer totaling 26 visitors. To schedule a group tour, contact Marilyn Gold at mjg36@cornell.edu or 716-699-2377 ext. 106 or 800-897-9189, ext. 106.
