FOR WHICH
IT STANDS…
(10/31/2008)
By Gerlind Dubey

For years Linda and Jonathan Moss traveled Rte. 219 south to their weekend home on Tough Row Hill Rd. in Ellicottville. Every trip brought them closer to their dream of Linda’s retiring from teaching so that the couple could expand their home and become fulltime residents of our community. Just a few short years ago, that day arrived and both Jonathan and Linda moved here full time and became members of the Ellicottville’s American Legion Post 659. With every visit to the Legion, Jonathan remarked that the front of the building needed a more patriotic garden and knowing Linda’s passion for gardening was dropping a hint.

Sadly, Jonathan passed away very shortly after their move to Ellicottville so Linda is planting this garden as a gift both to the Legion that Jonathan so loved and also to him. This summer Linda toured Washington DC and while there she stopped at the American Legion. She marveled at the lovely blue building with a Red, White and Blue flower garden and with that vision an idea was conceived. This past Thursday the plan sprang into action, after weeding and cultivating the soil, Linda went to work planting red and white tulips and blue hyacinth bulbs. The garden doesn’t stop there, next summer there will be a full bloom replica of the Washington DC capitol garden with red cannas decorating the flag post. There are more bulbs on their way so there is still more fall planting to do. If you happen to see Linda in front of the Legion working, stop by and lend a hand.

“While operations in Afghanistan and Iraq continue; the Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion Post 659/ Ellicottville wish to purchase phone cards for local servicemen and women serving overseas.  If you have someone in your family or if you know of someone currently serving, please call Linda Moss at 699-2745 or email her at clanmoss@aol.com with the name and address so that we can get the phone card to them.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veteran’s organization, and devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.

November 11 through November 17, 2007, is National Veterans Awareness Week.
