COMING TO HOLIDAY VALLEY
NYSGA Women’s Senior and
Super Senior Amateur Championship
By Kyle Benish (8/15/2008)

On August 19-20 Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville will be the proud host of the 2008 NYSGA Women’s Senior and Super Senior Amateur Championship. The Championship is a two-day event of medal play. One hundred twenty of some of the state’s best lady golfers will vie for the Anne Coupe Cup. The senior division begins with ladies 50 years of age and the super senior division begins with ladies 60 years of age.

The NYSGA arrives at Holiday Valley on August 18 for practice rounds and registration. Together with the Golf Staff at Holiday Valley they will set pin placements, determine course conditions and mark hazards for the two-day event.

In the past 54 years of The NYSGA Women’s Senior Championship, nine champions have resided in the Western New York area. Lancy Smith, a Member of the Park Club in Buffalo, won the prestigious championship four times. Champions in the area have come from clubs such as the Country Club of Buffalo, Park Club, Brookfield Country Club, Ravenwood Golf Club and Penfield Country Club.
The original trophy was retired in 1995 to the Country Club of Rochester in honor of Jean Trainor. Jean won the championship nine times, a NYSGA record for a single state championship. Trainor’s victories came in 1968, ‘69, ’71, ’76, ’77, ’78, ’81, ’82 and ’83. As of 1996, the event’s trophy is named The Anne Coupe Cup.

Participation in the New York State Golf Association (NYSGA) Championship Tournaments is limited to individuals who belong to a NYSGA Member Club, hold a valid, current handicap issued by a NYSGA member club, and comply fully with USGA Rules of Amateur Status; or are residents of the state of New York and are also Associate Members of the NYSGA in good standing.

For purposes of these eligibility guidelines an individual is considered to be a “resident” of New York if, as of the deadline date for entry and as of the last scheduled day of the tournament in which the individual seeks to compete, the individual maintains his/her primary residence in New York, is qualified to vote in local, state, and national elections in New York, and is required to file state income tax returns in New York.
